Mantra Practice

Peace Begins With Me

A mantra i return to often when things feel scattered and out of touch. It brings me back home to my centre, it tethers me back down. It’s simple and effective. Most holistic practices are. They just require discipline.

Most people practice repeating a mantra once, for maybe a minute and nothing happens so they give up thinking it’s a phoney, woo whoo, new age conspiracy or that they are doing it wrong somehow.

Unlike a drug, preventive medicine (yes mantra practice is preventive medicine) takes time.

Slow burn.

Accumulative.

Robust.

You are what you repeatedly say to yourself!

Mantra practice has been a very slow and steady progression for me. It started with me looking at the ways I was speaking to myself and the kinds of thoughts that we floating around in my head. 13 years ago is about the time that I started objectively looking at myself and my inner voice - thanks to studying Eastern health practices and philosophies.

I use to be pretty harsh towards myself and did a lot of self-criticizing. I would say things to myself that I would never say to another human being. My inner self-saboteur was ruthless. Once you begin to hear that inner voice you can begin to change it. Repeating mantras and generally saying kind things to myself has been a life-saving practice for me. The darkness became light.

Mantra practice is second nature to me now. I sing little mantras in my head and out loud as i go about my day. I weave it into my movement practices, meditation practices, and my soul healing practices.

There are still moments when the inner self-saboteur comes out to play but it gets easier and easier to see it as just that, play. A little game to see how far you’ve come. Testing and pushing your spirit towards expansion.
